Regarding Older Direct Vent Fireplaces |
|
The critical issue regarding the use of our fan, is if the fireplace is a direct vent model. The 'How it works' page shows an animation of how the fan pumps air though the space around the firebox on a direct vent fireplace. If your fireplace meets the criteria then the Quiet Fireplace Fan should work quite well. On some older model direct vent fireplaces the air gap at the back of the fire box is rather small which causes a serious restriction to air flow and reduces the efficacy of the fan. To check for this condition (when the fireplace is COLD) take a small mirror and a flash light, open the top and bottom grills on the fireplace which are above and below the glass plate that seals of the firebox area, shine the light into the air gap above and below the fire box holding the mirror at an angle all the way at the back of the air gap. You will be able see down or up and determine if the air gap at the back of the firebox is unobstructed. The circular flue may come straight out the back of the firebox or at an angle from the top back corner of the firebox. There should be 2" to 3" thick gaps on either side of the flue for air to pass. These gaps will normally be 6" to 10" wide. Typically the sides of the fire box are also paths for air to move from the bottom space to the top. If your fireplace has unobstructed spaces as described above the fan will work quite well. If you own an older
