Installation Instructions

CAUTION: 
 Make sure the fireplace has been turned off and is COOL before doing any of the activities required to install the Quiet Fireplace Fan and 12 Volt DC adapter.
Do not use the adapter with a dimmer switch or rheostat controlled outlet. It will be damaged and the fan will not run.

1. Unpack the fan and 12 Volt DC adapter. Plug the adapter into a wall receptacle that you know has power. Inset the plug at the end of the adapter cord into the jack on the back support leg of the fan. The fans will start and produce a steady flow of air. This checks that nothing was damaged in shipment.

2. The Quiet Fireplace Fan requires 3.3" clearance at the front lower space between the frame and the bottom of the firebox. There is usually a clip that holds the glass plate that seals the firebox on the sides of the gap. Be careful to not to measure the gap under it.

3. Direct Vent Fireplaces have a space under the firebox which contains the valves and gas pipes for the fireplace. There is normally a 115 VAC power receptacle which may or may not be turned on by from a wall switch beside the fireplace. The 12 Volt DC adapter plugs into this receptacle. If there is no switch or no receptacle we can provide a switched cable assembly or an  thermostat cable assembly to work with our fan. See the Products section

4. The 12 Volt DC adapter supplied with the Quiet Fireplace Fan plugs into the receptacle under the firebox. In some installations only one socket is wired to the 115 VAC. Plug the adapter into the fan and turn on the wall switch to make sure you have power going to the fan. Do NOT use with a dimmer switch or rheostat controlled outlet. Some installations (below) have a receptacle that does not have a switch controlling the power, in that case a switched cable assembly or our thermostat cable assembly is required. See them in the Products section.

Route the wire from the adapter so that it does not touch the top plate which is the bottom of the firebox. It becomes quite warm and could damage the insulation on the wires.

5. Inset the fan assembly into the gap below the firebox being careful to not catch the metalwork on the clips that hold the glass front plate in place. Inseting fan into space under the firebox

6. Position the fan assembly all the way to the back of the space under the firebox and position it in the center of the space. Make sure the fans are pointed to the BACK wall of the space. Push the fan up against the back wall and then draw it straight out by 1/8" to 1/4". It should not be in contact with the back wall. Make sure the adapter is plugged into the jack on the support leg of the fan.

This is the view you will see when the fan is properly installed.

7. This completes the installation. Turn on the switch and listen carefully for the sound of air flow around the firebox. After the fire has been running for 10 minutes or so, warm air from the front of the fireplace can be felt blowing out into the room.
 
NOTE: If the room becomes too warm and you have a central AC/Heating system, turn on the fan (auto -> fan) and circulate the additional heat through out your home.

8. If you purchased the variable speed fan model (QFF-xxxx-V), it has a speed adjustment on the side of the support leg circuit board (the little blue square). When the fireplace is COLD you can make the adjustment with a small slot head screwdriver or the adjustment tool supplied with each variable speed fan. Turn the white slotted portion back and forth until you have the fan speed and sound level desired. This allows you to adjust the proper airflow for your fireplace at the lowest sound level. Do not try to control the speed by using the fan and adapter on a dimmer switch or rheostat controlled outlet. It will damage the adapter and the fan will not operate.

  

Adjust the fan speed by turning the white slotted portion of the blue speed control with the adjustment tool supplied with each variable speed fan.

QFF-120-TS Thermostat Installation

1. The QFF-120-TS thermostat cable is used between the adapter output and the fan power input to provide automatic operation as the firebox heats up. Install the cable as shown in the picture so the adapter output jack is plugged into the receptacle end of the cable and the plug end of the cable is plugged into the fan jack.

2. Install the fan as in the instructions above and position the magnet and thermostat to the back of the bottom of the firebox. Let it attach itself to the undersurface of the firebox metal. Make sure it is not on a label or insulating surface, or directly under the pilot light assembly if your fireplace has one.

3. Route the cable from the magnet/thermostat so that it does not touch the bottom of the firebox. It will take 5-15 minutes for the thermostat to close after the fire is lit. When the fire is turned off, the fan will continue to run until the firebox has cooled down which can take up to an hour. The Quiet Fireplace Fan extracts much of the heat stored in the firebox assembly and propels it into the living space.

QFF-1-3-SW Switch Cable Installation

The switched cable is used between the adapter output and the fan power input to provide manual operation of the fan. Install the cable as shown in the picture for the thermostat cable so the adapter output jack is plugged into the receptacle end of the cable and the plug end of the cable is plugged into the fan jack. The power to the fan is turned on and off by pressing the switch (press on, press off). The switch can be brought out to the front of the fireplace grill at the edge, or left on the bottom of the air space behind the grill.
